Porcelain Doll Alsatian Costume
The Alsace is a picturesque region stretching along the Upper Rhine with a unique culture: tossed between Germany and France several times over the centuries, it has developed into a sort of melting pot uniting the best of both countries. The traditional costumes are a big part of the Alsatian culture. The ladies wear long skirts that are usually unicolor, in our case bright red. The floral ribbon just above the seam as well as the apron and the bodice are made from fine, expensive cloth and show the status of an Alsatian woman. The most important feature of the traditional costume, however, is the winged bonnet: an impressive stiff black bonnet made from shimmering taffeta that dates back to the 18th century and is still worn today.
