Traditional headdresses differ a lot from region to region and are worn especially for festive reasons. The “Goldhaube” which means “golden bonnet” is a feature of the traditional costumes of several areas of Lower Bavaria, for example Passau, and Upper Austria, like Linz. The origin of these intricately embroidered golden bonnets remains somewhat in the dark, but they most probably developed among the more affluent townsfolk during the 17th century and then slowly spread through the countryside and since the early 1800s they are a classic feature of the traditional costumes. Our porcelain doll is wearing a type of golden bonnet that you would find anywhere between Passau and Linz.
